• Starting the Game
  • The welcome screen shows a menu where you can scroll through it using the up and down arrow keys.
    • Your web browser saves your game progress.
    • After playing through a few levels the welcome menu offers options to continue and level select.
    • Initially the menu offers options for new game, settings, credits, and quit.
    • The settings button allows you to map different functions to different keyboard keys.
• Game Controls
  • Desktop
    • Press the left arrow key to move left.
    • Press the right arrow key to move right.
    • Press the Z key to jump. While you have boost active press Z again to double jump.
    • Press the X key to shoot. You can also hold the X key in place to hold your shot’s location, then move again so that you either drag the bullet across the screen when you move, or so that you release the bullet to through a jump recharge after using a double jump.
    • Press the down arrow key to drop down from a platform you can fall through.
  • Touchscreen devices
    • This game requires rather precise controls. Playing with an attached keyboard or a game controller is preferable than trying to play on a mobile device.

  • Basics
    • This is a pixel platformer where you have a magic orb which allows you to charge up double jumps and cross wide chasms.
      • Your bullets can also activate boxes which turn red & open gates when they are turned on.
    • The controls in this game are quite precise and the puzzle aspects are challenging.
      • Reflecting how challenging & frustrating some aspects of this game are, each stage has many unmarked checkpoints in it, so that you can restart right near wherever you make a mistake.
  • Levels
    • This game has 8 stages which are unlocked sequentially.
      • You can go back and replay previously beat levels by selecting them from the welcome menu.
    • Winning vs losing
      • You beat a stage by making it to the end safely.
      • You lose if you fall off platform into spikes or somehow get stuck in a way that makes it hard to progress further.
      • This game offers unlimited continues. When you die you start near where you died, as there are many unmarked checkpoints throughout the game.
  • Tips
    • Most puzzles have multiple different ways to beat them. If a jump seems impossible it may mean you have to go a different path, or find a way to recharge your jump in the middle of it.
    • Your bullet – or aura energy orb – is typically the solution to almost every problem.
      • The bullet operates like a boomerang & comes back to you, though you can also freeze it in position or intentionally get it stuck.
      • Where a jump seems impossibly high you may need to jump from further away, shoot a bullet, get the bullet stuck on the other side of a barrier, and then fall down, so that you can have the bullet fall down to charge a double jump.
      • You can leave your bullet on the other side of a recharge point so that you can conduct a double jump and then let the bullet move to recharge the double jump into a triple jump.
      • If there is a dangerous energy beam you need to cross you can shoot across it with your bullet and then warp across using the C button.
    • The complexity of this game in of requiring precise controls is quite high.
      • As an example, at the start of level 3 you have to charge up a double jump, jump off platform right, fall under a ledge sticking down, double jump under that ledge and back up, turn back left, shoot a bullet to charge up a triple jump, turn back right, and conduct the triple jump onto a platform.
      • The controls are tight, but if you do not like challenging games, this is not the game for you.
      • This game has been described as similar to Super Meat Boy (in of requiring precision) while also being more mentally challenging, like Celeste.
    • Secrets
      • In addition to puzzles having multiple ways to beat them, the game includes secret keys you can collect.
      • For example, on the long jump near the end of stage 7 you can fall through the tiny gap in the floor between spikes & defeat the machine down there to gain a key.

    • The original version of this game was created by USPGameDev’s Rafael Bordoni as his submission to the gmtk2019 game jam.
      • The game is named Charge Kid & is available on Steam, Itch, and Nintendo Switch.
      • The game was created in Godot Engine.
    • The version available for sale on Nintendo Switch or Steam has 17 stages, whereas the version of the game we host is from the open source fork with 8 stages.
